Hi Everyone ! Have you ever tried Fried Ice cream. I have never been more excited trying out any other dish in my kitchen.. Just the thought of frying something ice cold and not melting it was always a mystery for me…But wonder of wonders , it did manage to turn out very good. To be honest, the ice cream just melted the first time and was all over the oil , spluttering merrily away, much to my dismay. But that sound angered me so much, that I vowed not to rest until I got it right.

And it finally relented and turned out beautifully, just as it should be. So  after some trial and errors, here I have the no hassle recipe for you. The best part is you could prepare everything a day in advance and serve it in a moment’s notice when you have guests at home. Do try it and enjoy the compliments coming your way……

First things first:

  • Spread aluminium foil on a tray and place scoops of your favorite ice cream. Either a single flavor or a combination. Make sure the scoops are round. Now put the tray in the freezer and leave for a couple of hours till they are rock solid.
  • Crush some cornflakes, plain or flavored. A good idea would be to match the flavor of the cornflakes with the ice cream. I didn’t try that though.
  • Make a thick batter with flour and water.

Once the scoops are hard enough, quickly dip each one of them, first in the batter and then roll in the cornflakes. ( better to powder the cornflakes). Put them back in the freezer immediately. When I was doing this step, the ice cream scoops started melting fast. So I came upon an idea and placed the batter and cornflakes bowl in the freezer and started working right there. Pretty weird, but it works well. Now leave the prepared scoops in the freezer till they became very hard again.

When you are ready to serve:

Heat oil in a wok. And dip the frozen scoop of ice cream in the hot oil for very few seconds. Drain and serve with fresh fruits, honey or chocolate sauce.

You know you have hit the mark, when it is warm and crispy on the outside and cold inside. It is really easy. Do try it out……

There are conflicting stories about the dessert’s origin. Some claim that it was first served during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, where the ice cream sundae was also invented.[1] Though in 1894 a Philadelphia company was given credit for its invention describing : “A small, solid cake of the [ice] cream is enveloped in a thin sheet of pie crust and then dipped into boiling lard or butter to cook the outside to a crisp. Served immediately, the ice cream is found to be as solidly frozen as it was first prepared.” A third claim, beginning in the 1960s asserts that fried ice cream was invented by Japanese tempura restaurants. – Wikipedia

  1. I’m not sure what you meant about powdering the cornflakes.

What I meant was to crush the cornflakes finely. It ensures that the ice cream scoop is covered properly.

I’ve never had fried ice cream before. It seems like it’d be difficult to make since ice cream melts so quickly,

Even I thought so all these years. But it turns out excellent. Don’t worry, just try it. But make sure the ice cream scoops are real hard before you put them in oil.
