Green chicken : Petrichor

Green chicken curry
Green chicken curry

It has been raining here since a couple of days. The green season is finally here after a long spell of hot , dry weather. The trees and the plants have got their shower and look squeaky clean. The fields and landscape look lush and breathtakingly beautiful. And who doesn’t like the scent of rain  . It has an earthy pleasant aroma and I love it. I never knew till recently that there is a word especially coined for it. It is ‘Petrichor’

Petrichor is the pleasant smell that often accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather in certain regions. It was named by two Australian researchers, who discovered that the smell is an oily essence emitted from rocks or soils. The oil is a complicated mixture of at least fifty different compounds, rather like a perfume.

The lush green surroundings inspired me to make Green Chicken. It is not the Thai Green chicken but my own take on it. The beautiful aromas and flavors emanating from this dish complement the mood and the surroundings very well. Do try this dish on a rainy day. You will love it

Ingredients you need:

  • 1 chicken , cut in pieces
  • 2 onions, sliced fine
  • 2 tsp. ginger and garlic finely grated
  • 1 cup fresh coriander leaves/cilantro/ Italian parsley
  • 1 cup fresh mint leaves
  • 4-6 green chillies , as per your taste
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cloves+ 2 cardamom+ 1 inch cinnamon stick ground together(optional)♣
  • 2 tbsp. oil

Blend all the fresh herbs , chillies , yogurt and salt in a food processor . Heat oil in a deep bottomed pan and add onions. Saute for a few minutes and add chicken. Fry for a couple of minutes. Cover and cook.

Uncover after five minutes and add ginger, garlic and ♣. Saute well.

Now add the herb paste. Cover and cook  on low heat till the chicken is cooked.

Garnish with fried onion and fresh mint.Serve hot.

Accompaniment :  You can serve with steamed rice or breads.

It is time again for Angie’s Fiesta Friday. It is a great place to party and I am sort of getting addicted 🙂 . I am taking my rain inspired dish to her party. Hope everyone is going to enjoy my dish. FF 23 is being co hosted by  Margy @La Petite Casserole and Sylvia @Superfoodista

¡Hasta luego en la fiesta!

I would like to thank my  blogging friend Deepa for  nominating me for the Liebster Award. Deepa  who hails from the “Pearl City”, India hosts a beautiful blog called Madraasi- A tamilian tales . She shares amazing recipes worth bookmarking. Her posts are always accompanied by awesome pictures.

As my dear friend Nancy of Feasting with friends blog had  presented this award to me , earlier this year, which I have passed on to others, I will have to skip that part. ❤ But awards are awards <3. I love accepting them as many as possible and as many number of times they come my way 😉

Thank you Deepa once again for making my day 🙂

    Yuuummmy. This looks great.

My favourite rainy smell is not just after it rains, but just before. When you’ve had a month or two without rain, it can be so exciting to just know it’s coming because you can smell the rain on its way. It comes on the wind from where it’s raining just before it gets to you. I didn’t know it had a name though. It’s worth cooking this and dishing it up in the next drought so we can all try to remember the small of rain.

Aww.. That’s so kind of you to say that. I have experienced what you said when I was on the country side. Somehow I think that scent of pre rain just gets lost in a city.

I also did not know the word until last year when a friend named his haiku and photography blog ‘petrichor.’ Love the after-rain earthy smell but the word petrichor does not capture it for me. Lovely recipe and congrats on the awards!

Lovely recipe. I make a similar type of “green masala” with loads of coriander and other spices, I blend it all with some vinegar and use it on various dishes. Your chicken looks amazing! A great dish for a rainy day!
