Hummus with Spinach and Olive(s)- A New Menu for Popeye?

Popeye- the sailor man with the spinach can is a memorable character from our childhood. Most of us have grown up reading Popeye comics and later on watching Popeye cartoons on the television. The plot revolved around the fight between Popeye a sailor and Bluto his navy buddy turned arch rival to win the love of  the flighty flirty Olive Oyl. However, with the help of his trusty spinach, Popeye inevitably defeats him and rescues Olive from his clutches  and wins her affection at the end of the episode. One interesting fact I came to know about Olive was that she was actually named after Olive oil. She had a brother named Castor Oyl and her mother was Nana Oyl (after Banana Oil). And she was the main character for 10 years before Popeye became popular.

All through my childhood, Popeye’s obsession for canned spinach intrigued me. I used to wonder how he consumed tins and tins of bland spinach leaves without getting bored. Honestly, as a child I thought if I could invite Popeye for dinner, I could show him the different ways he could eat spinach 😀

So, a couple of days back when I made Green hummus with ‘Spinach‘ and ‘Olive Oil‘( the two loves of his life), I couldn’t help thinking of Popeye and chuckling to myself. Immediately, after dinner I made these comic images with some editing

That’s all I can stands, I can’t stands no more. ― Popeye

I present this Green Hummus Recipe for Popeye and all his fans

Green Hummus with Spinach and Olive Oil

I’ll take you all on one at a time!― Popeye:

  • 250 g boiled chickpeas
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 2 tbsp. lemon juice
  • salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp. tahini*
  • 2 tbsp. extra virgin ‘Olive Oil’
  • 1 bunch ‘Spinach’ leaves blanched
  • 1 green capsicum chopped

Method:

Combine all the ingredients in a food processor and blend to a fine puree with a thick consistency.Transfer this hummus to a bowl and make a well in the middle with the back of a spoon. Drizzle with extra virgin Olive Oil and a few green olives.

Notes:

  1. If you want the original version of hummus, skip the capsicum and the spinach.
  2. You can sprinkle paprika and/or sumac for extra flavor.
  3. Serve with Khoobz or pita bread.

*Tahini Recipe:

  • 2 cups sesame seeds
  • 1/3 cup olive oil

Toast the sesame seeds in a pan. Keep tossing all the while. Do not let them brown. Allow them to cool . Add olive oil and sesame in a food processor and blend to a thick paste. Add more Olive oil if needed.

I’m flirting with homemade hummus, and the addition of spinach is a nice touch. I’ll have to try that. Thanks for the tip. I’ve been using roasted red peppers, and they are a favorite.

  8. Funny story, but I have actually visited the set of the Popeye movie – was quite a surreal experience! I haven’t made hummus in a while but I do love when it is homemade and this looks lovely with the spinach – does it change the taste much? Thanks for sharing with Fiesta Friday!

Thank you Caroline ☺And wow!Isn’t that awesome. I’m sure that was an amazing experience.
The spinach and the bell pepper don’t change the taste in a big way. Its just that they add a subtle flavor to the hummus. The pepper could be roasted too but I wanted it to look green so I didn’t do that. I think it would work well as a healthy sandwich spread.

Similar story with me too lol! I used to read Popeye comics as a child, but watched umpteen number of tv shows along with my son. Even I fell in love with Hummus as I found it was a healthier alternative to mayo based spreads and dips. Thank you for liking 🙂

Thank you Justine ☺I used to read Popeye comics (can’t find them anymore ) and watched the cartoons on TV along with my kids. He is well known with both the generations. Maybe three or four. I never asked my parents and grand parents if they followed his comic strip. I think it started some time in 1920s.
